Fewer incidents in Amsterdam last New Year's

There were fewer incidents in Amsterdam over New Year's 2016-2017 compared to the previous year. Amsterdam counted a total of 255 incidents involving fireworks, vandalism, arson or abuse during the previous turning of the year. That amounts to 3 incidents per 10,000 inhabitants, compared to 3.6 during the 2015-2016 New Year's celebrations, Het Parool reports based on figures LocalFocus got from the police.

With 3 incidents per 10,000 inhabitants, Amsterdam is low on the list of most New Year's incidents. In the vicinity of Amsterdam, Bloemendaal and Haarlem had much more problems, with 10.3 and 8.7 incidents per 10,000 inhabitants respectively. Amstelveen had the fewest problems, with 1.5 incidents per 10 thousand inhabitants.

The national outliers are smaller municipalities, such as the Zeeland municipality of Reimerswaal with 18.4 incidents per 10 thousand residents, and the Groningen municipality of Hoogezand-Sappermeer with 16.4 incidents.

Fireworks cause the most problems during New Year's. Over the past New Year's the police registered 3,525 firework related incidents, followed by over 2 thousand cases of vandalism, and around 1,500 incidents of abuse.
