Schiphol flights to and from Atlanta canceled as power outage hits world's busiest airport

A power outage hit the Hartsfield-Jackson airport in Atlanta, the busiest airport in the world, around 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, Dutch time. As a result, over a thousand flights could not depart, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. The power outage also affected flights between the American city and Schiphol Airport on Monday.

All four flights arriving at Schiphol from Atlanta on Monday were canceled, according to information from Schiphol. And three out of four flights from Amsterdam to Atlanta were canceled. Only the Air France, Delta Airlines and KLM flight set to depart from Schiphol at 4:50 p.m. is still on schedule.

As it is the week before Christmas, and many people are traveling for the holidays, the Hartsfield-Jackson airport was extremely busy when the power outage hit. Around 6:00 a.m. Dutch time, the airport announced that power was restored. How long it will take for air traffic to be back on schedule, is not yet clear.

UPDATE: Power has been restored on all concourses. 5,000+ meals are being delivered to passengers. Trains will be operational soon.
