Pandas, Trump, Football among Netherlands' Twitter trends for 2017
American president Donald Trump was also on people in the Netherlands' minds this year, according to Twitter. The social media platform released the top Twitter trends of the Netherlands for 2017, and Trump is number four on the list. Like last year, 'vacture', or 'vacancy' in English, topped the list for the Netherlands this year. According to Twitter, this shows that the platform plays an important role in finding jobs in the Netherlands, RTL Nieuws reports.

Other trending topics included the two sporting highlights of the year - the Oranje Women winning the European title and Max Verstappen's performance in Formula 1. Barbara Barend calling on men to walk hand-in-hand after a gay couple was assaulted in Arnhem for doing just that, also got a massive following in the Netherlands and abroad.
The Netherlands' excitement for the arrival of two giant pandas at Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen also spilled over on Twitter. Pandas Xing Ya and Wu Wen were welcomed to the country on social media with the hashtag #pandakoorst, or panda fever in English.
Another striking trend was the #Habibachallenge, based on the song Habiba by Dutch rapper Boef, released in March. In the first scene of the music video, Boef runs across the street in his underpants. Fans copied him and posted their videos on social media under the hashtag. Boef decided to use the enthusiasm for a good cause, according to RTL Nieuws. He announced that everyone who refused the challenge, must donate a small amount to Giro555.
A notable absence from the Netherlands' trending list, is #MeToo, under which women around the world shared their stories about sexual abuse and harassment. The hashtag did reach Dutch media, with a number of Dutch celebrities also speaking out about sexual abuse, but not the Netherlands' Twitter trends. Whether #MeToo is reflected in the worldwide trends, will only be clear when Twitter releases its global list, according to the broadcaster.
