Shell acquires 30,000 electric charging stations in Amsterdam buyout

Shell is expanding its range of electric car charging points with the acquisition of NewMotion. The Amsterdam based company is one of Europe's largest players in the field of charging stations. The amount involved in the acquisition was not disclosed, ANP reports.

NewMotion has over 30 thousand charging points at individuals' homes and companies in the Netherlands, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. The company also issued more than 100 thousand charging passes, which gives customers access to around 50 thousand charging points in 25 European countries.

Under Shell, the Amsterdam company can expand its potential client base significantly. It also allows Shell to offer its customers a broader range of automotive fuels, Matthew Tipper, the person responsible for new fuels at the Dutch oil and gas giant, said according to ANP. "We need newcomers like NewMotion", Tipper said.

NewMotion will continue to operate under its own brand name after the acquisition. The acquisition also doesn't affect Shell's previously announced plans to build quick charging points at some regular gas stations in the Netherlands and other places.
