Stolen Audi set alight in Utrecht

An Audi RS5 burnt out under suspicious circumstances in the Utrecht neighborhood of Lombok during the early hours of Monday morning. The car was stolen from Berlicum late in December 2016. The police believe arson was involved, NOS reports.

The car crashed into a pole on Kanaalstraat at around 1:30 a.m., according to the broadcaster. A few loud bangs were heard and the car went up in flames. When the police and fire department arrived at the scene, there was no sign of the driver or any passengers. Witnesses saw two people running in the direction of Borneostraat, according to NU.nl.

As it was unclear whether the car contained anything dangerous, bystanders were kept at a distance while the fire department fought the fire.

Whether this is related to the so-called Audi gang is not yet clear. The Audi gang is a group of criminals that use stolen fast cars, like Audis, to commit ATM bombings and burglaries in Germany and then flee to the Netherlands. According to newspaper AD, the gang consists of about 250 criminals from the Utrecht region
