Anti fascist group marches through Amsterdam to show support for Charalottesville

Anti-fascist organization AFA demonstrated in Amsterdam on Thursday evening. A large number of people marched through the Dutch capital tho show support for their allies in Charlottesville, United States where a mass gathering of right-wing extremist groups ended in the death of a young woman on Saturday, ANP reports.

According to the police, the demonstration went well - there was good contact with the demonstrators and no arrests were made.

The protestors walked with banners and flags from the Spui through the city center. The march ended at the statue of Kerwin Duinmeijer, who was killed by skinheads in 1983, at around 10:00 p.m. According to the AFA, about 600 people participated in the march. According to the police, it was around 250.

Mayor Eberhard van der Laan gave permission for the march earlier on Thursday, though he did reprimand the AFA for not registering the demonstration with the municipality beforehand. He also imposed a number of extra conditions. For example, the protesters were not allowed to wear face-covering clothing or set anything on fire. They were also banned from lighting fireworks, though this still happened, according to the news wire.
