Schiphol group to switch to sustainable Dutch wind energy next year
As of January 1st next year, all airports in the Schiphol Group will run entirely on sustainable energy generated in the Netherlands. The airport company signed a long-term agreement to this effect with electricity provider Eneco, ANP reports.
The Schiphol group covers the airports Schiphol, Eindhoven, Rotterdam and Lelystad. Together the airports use about 200 gigawatt hours of power every year. That's comparable to the consumption of 60 thousand households.
The agreement states that Eneco will supply that power over the next 15 years, according to ANP. Initially energy for the airports will come partly from existing renewable energy sources, but from 2020 the airports will be powered solely from newly built wind farms.
"For the energy transition it is crucial that the business world, by far the largest energy consumer, embraces sustainability", Eneco CEO Jeroen de Haas said, according to the news wire. Large deals like the one with Schiphol makes it possible for the energy supplier to invest in renewable energy generation, like new wind farms.
