Amsterdam's biggest data center opens on Science Park

AM4, the largest data center in Amsterdam and the largest in the Netherlands that can be used by multiple companies, opened its doors at the Science Park in Amsterdam on Wednesday. The new data center is owned by American company Equinix and was built in order to meet Amsterdam's growing demand for data traffic, AD reports.

The data center consists of 120 thousand powerful servers and is located in a 13 story high, windowless tower. It cost about 160 million euros to build. Companies like Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Netflix make use of Equinix's services. AM4 will officially start operating in August.

Google and Microsoft both have data centers in the Netherlands that are larger than AM4, but these are exclusively used by their owners.

Amsterdam's data capacity growth has been outpacing European competitors like London, Frankfurt and Paris for years. Last year the Dutch capital's capacity grew by 30 percent, and the city now has the second biggest data capacity in Europe, after London.
