Gay couple abused in Amsterdam asks witnesses to come forward

A gay couple assaulted on Kerkstraat in Amsterdam-Centrum on Saturday night are spreading pamphlets and posted a letter in AT5 calling for witnesses to come forward.

The police believe that the assault may have been a hate crime. "We need to do further investigation whether anti-gay violence was involved, but based on the statements of the victims it seems that way", a spokesperson said to Het Parool. A number of city councilors will pose questions about the incident during the city council meeting on Wednesday afternoon, according to the newspaper.

The two men were walking on Kerkstraat on Saturday night when they were insulted because of their sexual orientation and attacked. Both were injured, but did not have to go to hospital, according to the newspaper.

Gay couples in Arnhem and Eindhoven were also assaulted over the weekend.
