Prosecutor closes investigation into 2008 unexplained Schiedam death
The Public Prosecutor closed the investigation into the death of 19-year-old Leon Groeneweg from Schiedam. There are no new leads to follow and it is not even clear whether a crime was committed, AD reports.
Leon Groeneweg disappeared in June 2008, shortly after telling his parents that he wants to part ways with a group of friends because of their increasing drug use and criminal activity. His body was found in the Brielse Meer, near camp Kruininger Gors nine days later.
The authorities exhumed Groeneweg's body last year, but it revealed no new information. It is still not clear what happened to him, whether other people were involved in his death or even whether a crime was committed.
The Prosecutor notified Groeneweg's family that the case is now closed.
Groeneweg's parents are not giving up. "This end is a new beginning", they said to the newspaper. They will ask their lawyer to file an Article 12 procedure to force the prosecutor to continue. They will also request the case file, so they can investigate by themselves.
