Judge Trump by his actions, not his Tweets says Dutch Defense Min
Defense Minister Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert thinks that the world would do better to judge new American president Donald Trump on his actions and not on his tweets. Trump's twitter activity "causes a lot of debate and headlines and I don't think the world benefits from it", she said, according to newspaper AD.
Despite his negative statements on the matter, Hennis believes that the United States under Trump will still be closely involved in NATO. According to her, a strong alliance "is not only in the interest of Europe but also of the Americans". "Hi said that NATO is nearly 70 years old. To which I say: 'mr. Trump is also 70 years old.' Just because NATO is almost 70 years old does not mean it should retire."
Hennis believes that Trump will follow the course of his predecessors. "I can not imagine a world without the United Nations, without EU, without NATO. And I think that Trump knows that very well."
Minister Bert Koenders of Foreign Affairs thinks that we'll have to wait and see whether Trump will make big changes. "A president can only be judged by his actions. What exactly will change is unclear. There are different signals. So I am waiting to see what happens." He also takes it as "a given" that the U.S. will remain part of NATO.
