Minister Wopke Hoekstra of Finance is "very satisfied" with the agreement the EU Finance Minsters reached about the so-called  eurozone budget, calling it a "fruitful result for Dutch tax payers". "We have taken important steps towards better spending of EU money", the Dutch Finance Minister said in Luxembourg on Thursday, AD reports.

A vast majority in the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, support sanctions against Turkey following a Turkish invasion in northeastern Syria. The Dutch government is looking into a "wide range of measures" against Turkey, Minister Sigrid Kaag of Foreign Trade, standing in for Foreign Affairs Minister Stef Blok who is abroad, said in a parliamentary debate on the matter on Thursday, NOS reports.

The province of Utrecht came in 2nd place on the list of Europe's most livable regions, the Regional Competitiveness Index (RCI). First place went to Stockholm in Sweden. Utrecht shares second place with London, RTV Utrect reports.

The European Union compiles the RCI every three years, judging regions' livability based on various themes including infrastructure, innovation, health, gender equality, and sustainability.

The United States is imposing import tariffs of 25 percent on a range of European products. These include cheese, pork, butter, mussels and pears from the Netherlands, according to a list published by American trade envoy Robert Lightizer on Wednesday. The tariffs take effect on October 18th.

Since the British population decided that the United Kingdom should leave the European Union in a referendum in June 2016, Dutch investments in the UK decreased steadily and existing investments were even withdrawn. British investments in the Netherlands, on the other hand, more than quadrupled since the Brexit decision was made, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday.

After two years of haggling between The Hague and Brussels, the European Commission approved the regulation that makes it possible to distribute flights between Schiphol and Lelystad Airport, NOS reports based on a draft decision in its possession. The proposal was submitted to all European Union Member States, and they agreed to it unanimously, according to the broadcaster.

Dutch businesses are largely unconcerned by the United Kingdom's approaching departure from the European Union, research agency SEO Economic Research said in a report on Wednesday. Only 15 percent of the 684 businesses the SEO spoke to have noticed Brexit related problems. Over 55 percent said they experience little to no issues resulting from the Brexit, NU.nl reports.

Thousands of Dutch are seemingly planning to say "goodbye" to the United Kingdom with a beach party on Strand Wijk Aan Zee on October 31st - the date of the Brexit, according to an event created on Facebook. The event initiator invites everyone to bring a beach chair, Dutch chips, French wine and German beer and watch across the sea as Great Britain wakes up as a "closed institution".

The Dutch population grew by 46 thousand people in the first half of this year, mainly due to immigration, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday. The number of British people moving to the Netherlands more than doubled compared to the same period last year. This likely has to do with the United Kingdom's imminent departure from the European Union.

The Dutch government is nominating only one candidate for the position of director of the International Monetary Fund. And that candidate is former PvdA Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem, sources in The Hague confirmed to both NOS and the Volkskrant.

Earlier this week current Finance Minister Wopke Hoekstra said that the Netherlands has a few excellent candidates. On Friday he said that one candidate seems to be holding really good cards and that the government wants to improve their position even further. He did not mention any names.

After days of long and intense meetings in Brussels, the European leaders reached an agreement. Dutch Frans Timmermans will not be the president of the European Commission. That position will go to German Minister of Defense Ursula von der Leyen. Instead Timmermans will likely stay on in his current position, vice-president of the European Commission, though the European Parliament still has to approve that, NOS and RTL Nieuws report.

Amsterdam and nine other European tourist cities want more support from the European Union in their fight against tourist rental through online platforms like Airbnb. They issued a joint statement in response to a ruling by the Advocate General of the European Court of Justice stating that Airbnb is an informal service provider and therefore needs to take little to no responsibility for complying with holiday rental rules, NOS reports.

The turnout for this election, which was held in all EU Member States between Thursday and Sunday, was the highest since 1979, the European Parliament said on Twitter.

Theresa May is stepping down as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and  leader of the Conservative Party. At a press conference on Friday, May said that her decision to resign was made with the country's best interests in mind. May will step down as leader of the Conservative Party on June 7th. She will continue as Prime Minister until the party chose her successor. It is now up to her successor to finalize the UK's departure from the European Union, she said.

Approximately 13.5 million residents of the Netherlands are eligible to vote in the European Parliament elections next week. 3.6 percent of this group do not have Dutch nationality, but are EU citizens, Statistics Netherlands reported on Friday based on population figures from 1 January 2019.

In the run-up to the European Parliament elections next week, Prime Minister Mark Rutte is talking about his vision for Europe. According to the VVD leader, his ideas about that have shifted.  "Europe is market and currency, but a point has been added", he said to Nieuwsuur on Wednesday night. That point is safety. Without the European Union, the Netherlands is just a small country on its own in a big and increasingly volatile world.
