City of Amsterdam donates ground for MH17 memorial near Schiphol

The municipality of Amsterdam is donating 13 thousand cubic meters of ground for the MH17 memorial set to be constructed near Schiphol, Het Parool reports.

The monument in Vijfhuizen park will consist of a memorial wall as well as 298 trees - one for each victim. The trees will be planted this summer. But as the ground at the cite for the memorial is contaminated, the trees would not be able to grow. Amsterdam therefore decided to donate 13 thousand cubic meters of clean earth for the memorial.

The total cost of this donation, including transporting the ground from the ground depot Noorder IJplas, is about 50 thousand euros. The Amsterdam service Land and Development will carry the cost. This is partly because one of the service's employees and her family died in the MH17 disaster.
