Over 5 terabits per second flow through Amsterdam internet exchange

Amsterdam's internet exchange AMS-IX processed 5 terabits per second on Sunday around 8:30 p.m., a new record and a 19 percent increase in the amount of internet traffic flowing through the exchange comapred to the end of 2015, NU.nl reports.

According to AMS-IX, the new milestone can be contributed to the overall growth of internet traffic in Western Europe. The Amsterdam internet exchange can currently handle up to 20 terabits per second.

Cisco Networking Index - an institution that keeps an eye one internet traffic - expects that larger and larger data volumes will have to be processed in teh coming years. Video traffic on the internet continues to grow, for example, and the number of connections is expected to double from 1.6 billion to 3.7 billion.
