Guaranteed monthly wage proposal submitted to Dutch parliament

A citizens' intiative to introduce basic income in the Netherlands in 2018 will be submitted to parliament on Tuesday. The initiative has 58,800 signatures, significantly more than the 40 thousand needed to submit a proposal to parliament.

The initiators want to give everyone in the Netherlands a guaranteed income of, for example, 1,000 euros per month, basic health insurance and an allowance for children under the age of 18 years. They believe this will give people more freedom to decide what they really want to do. Instead of being stuck in a hated job to provice for their families.

Now that the proposal is submitted, the signatures will be check as well as whether this is a topic parliament hasn't dealt with yet. This can take about a month, according to RTL. After that parliamentarians will debate and vote on the matter. If a majority is in favor of the proposal, the responsible minsitry will be asked to change the policy.
