Police dig up hair salon looking for couple missing 27 years
The police are digging up a hair salon n Haagsestraat in Cuijk looking for the bodies of Jan and Riet Kelders. The couple disappeared in September 1989, the Gelderlander reports.
Both were 61-years-old when they disappeared without a trace. The couple used to live where the hair salon is now located.
The police's cold case team recently reexamined the missing file on Jan and Riet Kelders. They found evidence that a crime may have been committed. There are also indication sthat they were buried on the property where their home once stood.
In August the ground under the property was examined using special equipment. "Based on these results, we decided to dig", a spokesperson for the police said to the newspaper. The digging started on Monday and the police expect to work on it the rest of the week.
The police spokesperson could not comment on any possible suspects in the Kelders couple's murder, in the interest of the investigation. The motive is also unclear. "We must now wati and see if we find the remains of the couple in the ground", was all the spokesperson would say.
Rumors and stories about the fate of the missing couple is a regular topic of discussion in the town, Ingrid Giebos, manager of the hair salon, said to the newspaper. "Since then it's often a topic of discussion, especially with our older customers. But about the rumors going around, we can't say anything now, the police said." The hair salon is still open. The police are digging in the storage space and therefore not interfering with business.
