Three Amsterdam students hospitalized after hazing

Three prospective members of the Amsterdam Student Corps (ASC) were hospitalized this past month during hazing, NOS reports. The students had to swim in canals and sleep between rubbish. According to the broadcaster, one student is still in hospital three weeks later with an intestinal infection. Another had severe pneumonia. And the third sprained an ankle in what the ASC calls "an unfortunate jump". All three were part of one group of 12.

The board of the association handed out internal punishment due to the incidents. The group violated rules of an agreement they all had to sign, rector Boris Bekkering said to NOS. At this stage the penalty is that the group can recruit fewer members next year. "This hits them hard because it can affect the continuity of the dispute", he said. The board is considering suspending the entire group.

Bekkering emphasized that no violence was involved and no one drank alcohol. He added that no prospective members decided not to join to society after hazing. Last week a student trying to join the Groningen student association Vindicat was hospitalized with a cerebral edema after a hazing incident. This led to the municipality wanting to ban hazing in the city. It also led to student associations not being added to the list for cultural heritage
