Health inspectorate: Clinics must improve sperm donor registration

The 17 fertility clinics in the Netherlands need to improve their registration of sperm donors, according to the Healthcare Inspectorate. This is to prevent donors singing up at multiple clinics and ending up with dozens of offspring, ANP reports. In 2004 it became illegal to donate anonymously. Clinics must report all donor information to the foundation for artificial fertilization's donor data SDKB. The rest of the clinics' donor conception is well regulated, the Inspectorate found. All fertility clinics record the relationships between donors, recipients and consequent pregnancies in their archives as well as in the donor registry. "The Inspectorate is confident that the information on donors and the women who became pregnant with donor cells is reliable", the Inspectorate concludes. The Inspectorate launched an investigation into the Dutch fertility clinics following the 2009 closure of Bijdorp Medical Center in Barendrecht. The clinic was closed due to its sperm bank's files not being in order.
