Rotterdam police shoot one after chase; second person sought

The Rotterdam police shot one man during a car chase in the city on Saturday. He was arrested and taken to the hospital. A second suspect is still being sought, the police said in a statement. A around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, the police tried to pull over a car with two people for a traffic check. Instead of stopping, the driver sped away. The police gave chase. The car came to a standstill due to traffic on 1e Middellandstraat in Rotterdam. Officers tried to arrest the two men in the car, but they managed to speed away again. One officer drew his gun and fired a shot. One of the men in the car was hit in the arm. The car was finally stopped in the parking lot of a sports association on Abraham van Stolkweg. Both men got out of the car and ran away. The wounded suspect was quickly found hiding in a ditch. He was arrested, after a warning shot was fired, and taken to the hospital. The second man is still on the loose and the police are looking for him. When the police searched the car afterwards, they found drugs and a firearm. The weapon and drugs were seized. As is standard procedure in any police involved shooting, the Rijksrecherche is investigating the incident. The Rijksrecherche is the department that handles internal investigations at the police.
