Insurer pays out €34.8 million to VU hospital for water damage caused by water main break

Amsterdam hospital VUmc is getting 34.8 million euros in insurance money for damage caused by mass flooding last year this time. The flooding was caused by a break in the water main that left the hospital nonoperational for two weeks. The actual damage is quite a bit higher than the insurers are paying out, a spokesperson for the hospital said to NU.nl. How much higher is hard to say as part of the damage is difficult to calculate - such as damages suffered through loss of business in the two weeks the hospital was closed. Exactly a year ago today there was a water main break right next to VUmc. The entire hospital was evacuated as the flooding resulted in the hospital having no water or power. These were only restored about a week later. VUmc reopened two weeks after the flooding.
