Prison time for Dutch anti-asylum rioters
Four men received prison sentences on Monday for their involvement in riots against the arrival of an asylum center in Geldermalsen in December last year, NU reports.
Two suspects, age 53 and 22 years, were given 6 months in prison, two of which conditionally suspended, and probation periods of two years. A third suspect was given 6 months in prison, three of which conditionally suspended and two years probation. The fourth suspect, a 20 year old, was given two months in jail, one of which suspended, and three years probation.
A fifth suspect was only given 100 hours of community service. Two of the suspects also have to pay compensation to two officers.
According to the judiciary, these five suspects carry the highest share of the blame in the riots that broke in Geldermalsen during a meeting on the possible arrival of an asylum center on December 16th. On Monday the court said that the rioters created an "atmosphere of violence and intimidation."
Plans for the asylum center were scrapped shortly after the riots.
