Groningen schools get €291 million for earthquake safety

The Dutch government allocated 291 million euros for strengthening schools in Groningen to make them earthquake-proof, Minister Henk Kamp of Economic Affairs and Education Minister Jet Bussemaker and State Secretary Sander Dekker wrote to parliament on Monday, ANP reports. "Schools have priority and will not only be strengthened, but will also immediately be made future proof", Kamp said. "This approach fits with the broad commitment of the government: give the region perspective." Hans Alders, the National Coordinator for Groningen, calculated that 101 schools will need money in the coming years to be strengthened against earthquakes caused by natural gas extraction in the province. After consultation it was decided to strengthen 41 schools. 60 schools will be closed and 29 schools will be built in the region. Most of the 291 million euros investment comes from oil and gas company NAM, which is contributing 172.5 million euros. The nine involved municipalities are contributing 44.5 million euros, Bussemaker is contributing 50 million euros and Kamp 23.5 million euros.
