Giro d'Italia draws over 500,000 spectators

The Giro d'Italia cycling race drew over 575 thousand spectators during the four days it was in the Netherlands - from the team presentation in Apeldoorn on Thursday to the third stage in Nijmegen on Sunday, the organization announced. A massive 255 people watched the third stage from Nijmegen to Arnhem on Sunday, according to the organization. Some 30 thousand fans were at the start in Nijmegen, 165 thousand were counted along the course and about 60 thousand waited at the finish line in Arnhem. Red Cross first aid workers had a relatively quiet day on Sunday, despite the many spectators. Four people needed help in Nijmegen and 10 in Arnhem, two of whom were sent to consult a doctor, a spokesperson said to news wire ANP. First aid workers treated people for abrasions, seizures and problems with drugs and alcohol, among other things. The cyclists will now take a plane to Italy for the remaining 18 stages of the race.
