Netherlands near top of Europe’s safest roadways

The Netherlands is the 3rd safest country in Europe when it comes to safe roadways. Last year there were 28 traffic accident fatalities per million inhabitants in the country. Only Sweden and Malta had fewer fatalities, according to a report by the EU Commission for Road Safety, RTL Nieuws reports. For the first time since 2001 there was an increase in the number of people killed in traffic accidents across the European Union. Last year 26 thousand people died in a traffic accident in the EU, 300 more than in 2014. On average there are 51.1 traffic accident fatalities per million EU inhabitants. The majority, 55 percent, of the fatal accidents happened in rural areas. 38 percent happened in city areas and 7 percent of fatal accidents happened on highways.
