Over 14,000 want Amsterdam Arena renamed Johan Cruijff Stadium
More than 14 thousand people signed an online petition to rename the Amsterdam ArenA the Johan Cruijff Stadium, following the football legend's death on Thursday.
"A legend died on 24 March 2016. He could not win his fight against cancer any more. What a tribute it would be to rename the Amsterdam ArenA to the Johan Cruijff Stadium. Johan fought for his clubs for years, but this fight he could not win", the petition reads.
A number of Amsterdam officials are already behind the name change. Amsterdam mayor Eberhard van der Laan told AT5 that he is for a Johan Cruijff stadium and Sports alderman Eric van der Burg also aid he supported it. Ajax director Edwin van der Sar told the broadcaster that he is "keeping all options open".
In Barcelona, a memorial to Cruijff will open at the Camp Nou stadium on Saturday. The football stadium is home to FC Barcelona, where Cruijff played from 1973 to 1978. He was a huge star there, scoring 48 goals. Camp Nou is scheduled for a six-year renovation beginning in 2017 to expand seating capacity to 105,000.
