Justice Min. accused of hazing Leiden students as unpaid labor

While current Justice Minister Ard van der Steur was a lecturer at the University of Leiden, he hazed students by making them perform chores at his home in Warmond, NRC reports. According to the news agency, dozens of students, including students Van der Steur later taught, performed chores at the castle where Van der Steur rented an apartment. This happened until 2009. The chores formed part of the students' hazing when they joined student association Minerva, of which Van der Steur was also a member. The students had to, for example, rake the gravel road and clean the massive staircase, all without paid. According to the University of Leiden's code of conduct, lecturers should keep their contact with students "professional" and there should be "no mixing of personal and professional relationships".
