Air traffic safety issues at Schiphol prompts new investigation

The Dutch Safety Board launched a "thematic investigation" into air traffic safety at and around Schiphol airport in Amsterdam. This follows a number of incidents at the airport over the past years, the Safety Board announced on Wednesday. The aim of the investigation is to determine whether these incidents have "underlying structural causes, such as the design, location and use of the airport". The Safety Board wants to contribute to improving the safety at Schiphol, also because of the airport's expected growth in the coming years. The incidents that the Safety Board investigated over the past years include, among other things, planes taking off from a runway that hasn't been released, crossing or driving on runways that is being used for air traffic, and technical problems.
