Arrest made in deadly Amsterdam Centraal stabbing; Police: Witnesses needed
Amsterdam police arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with a fatal stabbing that took place across the street from the city’s central station. The suspect was picked up on Tuesday, and does not have a fixed address, police said in a statement.
The incident happened a day earlier at 10:30 p.m. when the two men walked by a group of people at the crosswalk separating Amsterdam Centraal and the Park Plaza Victoria Hotel on Damrak. The victim was stabbed in the chest and collapsed on the tram tracks there.
Witnesses at the scene described a 1.7-meter-tall white man running from the scene. The unkempt man was believed to be in his early thirties, wearing a dark jacket and having a stubble beard.
Police are looking to speak with anyone who was near the scene at that time, including the two men who stopped a tram from running over the victim, the tram operator, and any taxi drivers working near the scene at the time.
Investigators say they also hope to speak with anyone who helped provide first aid at the crime scene.
At the time of the incident, police said the victim was revived on the Damrak before he was transported by ambulance. He died at an area hospital.
