Only slight increase in female professors

The proportion of female professors in the Netherlands showed a slight increase over the past years. Last year 17.1 percent of the professors in the Netherlands were female. This is according to the latest Monitor Female Professors, which was presented in Utrecht on Thursday, the Volkskrant reports. The new figures revealed that female professors more often work full time than their male counterparts. Also notable is that the percentage of female doctoral students has been decreasing for several years. This can partly be attributed to poor prospects and harsh demands, according to the Volkskrant. There is only one university in the Netherlands where the proportion of female professors decreased between 2003 and 2014 - Wageningen University. Spokesperson Simon Vink called it a concern. "It's a question of small numbers, there a woman leaves somewhere else two men are hired. But it is not good and must definitely be better", he said to the newspaper.
