Foggy start to warmest Nov. 3 on record

When November 3rd began, commuters in the north of the country could be forgiven for expecting the third-straight chilly, foggy day. By 2 p.m., the warmest temperature on record was recorded in Maastricht with the help of sunny skies and no wind. The temperature climbed to 20.9 degrees Celsius, breaking the previous record of 20.7 logged on this day in 1927, also in Maastricht, according to weather website WeerOnline. It was a marked contrast to the the morning, where Twente registered temps nearing -2 degrees, while other parts of the country started the day at about 2 degrees Celsius. Regular record-keeping began across the Netherlands in 1901. It has only been hotter on two occasions in November. The all-time record was set on November 1 of last year with a temperature of 22.0 degrees Celsius, measured in Ell. November 4, 1994 saw Maastricht reach 21.1 degrees to hold the second highest temperature on record. Such extreme temperature differences between day and night are a rare occurrence for November in the Netherlands,
