Scabies outbreak reported in Limburg asylum center

An outbreak of scabies at a temporary asylum reception center in Reuver, Limburg has emergency services quickly trying to contain the infection. Fire department personnel working in the region say 48 people from Eritrea are suffering from the skin condition, newswire ANP reported. A large emergency team descended on the Reuver location at about 5:30 p.m. “Scabies can spread easily under crowded conditions where close body and skin contact is common. Institutions such as nursing homes, extended-care facilities, and prisons are often sites of scabies outbreaks,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States. Potential refugees were first scheduled to arrive at the Sporthal De Schans in Reuver on Friday, the town announced last week. The facility was expected to hold up to 200 people. Many of those arriving at the facility were previously staying at Swalmen, Limburg. Though not necessarily a serious disorder, scabies causes skin irritation, a rash and severe itching up to six weeks after infection. There are several treatments for the affliction, and typically everyone living in a home together and recent sexual partners receive treatment. https://twitter.com/1001ptsNL/status/657633408227680256
