Police worker accused of stealing nine kilos of coke from evidence locker

An employee of the police department is accused of stealing nine kilograms of cocaine and could be implicated in the disappearance of 700 grams of heroin. The 60-year-old suspect is still in custody. He was based in Amsterdam at the time the drugs went missing from an evidence facility on Johan Huizingalaan on the west side of the city, broadcaster AT5 reported last week. The cocaine had been stored there on February 13th, and it was not discovered missing until March 5th. Prosecutors alleged the suspect broke into the vault where the goods were stored. The cocaine has an estimated street value of 450,000 euros. Roughly 50,000 euros in cash was found during a search of the suspects’ home which he said was earned while doing odd jobs at his step-sisters’ café, a claim which she denied. His lawyer said the step sister denies this because she does not want to get into trouble for paying someone cash under the table. Over the past 20 years he earned over 120,000 euros working for her, he said through his attorney. Investigators are also looking into his ownership of a Mercedes SLK, Smart Roadster and a mobile home, as well as the source of income for trips to Greece and Spain, the broadcaster added. An initial court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
