MP pushing Dutch border controls pending EU refugee summit

If Europe does not come up with a structural solution for the ever increasing number of refugees, the Netherlands should intensify the border controls. This is according to VVD parliamentarian Malik Azmani in an interview with NOS on Monday. He was reacting to Germany's decision to introduce temporary border controls to get the influx of refugees under control. According to him Belgium and Austria is also considering additional checks at the border. If Europe does not find a solution, the Netherlands will have to do that too. "Then it becomes an every man for himself kind of Europe", the parliamentarian said. Azmani hopes that the European ministers address the problem in Brussels on Monday. He wants the borders to be better monitored and safe havens created in the regions the refugees come from. "And the asylum procedures must be stopped. Only then will you prevent people making the perilous journey to Europe", he said to the broadcaster. According to him, people in need are still welcome - they can be invited to come to the Netherlands. The VVD parliamentarian's desires are very much in line with the cabinet's plan to change the European asylum policy, which Security and Justice State Secretary Klaas Dijkhoff is arguing for in Brussels on Monday. Coalition party PvdA does not agree with the need for intensified border controls. "We should not go through with the everyone-for-themselves type of thinking", PvdA parliamentarian Attje Kuiken said to NOS. "We must work on a collective asylum policy. That Germany believes to be forced to it, shows how great the need is. We are counting on the decisiveness of European leaders to tackle it together."
