Previously unseen M.C. Escher drawing surfaces

A previously unseen work by famous artist M.C. Escher has been acquired by Escher in het Paleis, the permanent Escher exhibition located in the former winter palace of queen-mother Emma in The Hague. According Escher in het Paleis, the famous artist made this drawing in 1924 while staying in Rome. The drawing shows the town Montecelio, about 20 kilometers north-east of Rome with the ruins of a fort from 998 at the top, curator Micky Piller discovered. Escher in het Paleis acquired the drawing - on a large sheet of 33 x 63 centimeters - from Escher's family. The exhibition states that they are overjoyed to add this unique work, which has never been in circulation, to its collection. The Montecelio is an important piece of art because "it is a connection between Escher's training at the Haarlem School for Architecture and Decorative Arts and the later Italian panoramas", according to Escher in het Paleis.
