Spanish Masters exhibit set for November at Hermitage Asmsterdam

From November 28th the Hermitage museum in Amsterdam will be hosting the long-awaited Spanish Masters of the Hermitage exhibition. The exhibition includes more than 60 paintings and a collection of graphic works and applied arts pieces by artists such as El Greco, Velázquez, Murillo and Goya. According to the museum, this will be the first time ever that the Netherlands will host such a comprehensive survey of Spanish art - work that is not very present in Dutch museum collections. The exhibition is about the Golden Age of Spanish painting from the late 16th century and throughout the 17th century, coinciding with the Dutch Golden Age. During that time Spain commissioned an abundant of artworks with wealth gained largely during the country's period of colonial gold fever. Masterpieces featured in the exhibition includes The Apostles Peter and Paul by El Greco, Portait of the Count Duke of Olivares by Velazquez and Immaculate Conception by Murillo. The exhibition also includes paintings by these famous artists' pupils and later painter, up until and including Picasso. "Together they tell the story of the rise and glory of Spanish art in the Golden Age, which would continue to influence art into modern times", the museum writes. The exhibition will be at the Hermitage Amsterdam from November 28th to May 26th next year.
