People with autism too often misdiagnosed: report

People with autism are too often misdiagnosed at first, often resulting in a long delay before they get the correct help and support. With young people it takes up to five ears, up to 8 years in adults, before the right diagnosis is made. This is according to a report by the Autism Diagnostic, commissioned by the working group "Vanuit autisme bekeken", or "Viewed from autism" in English, NU reports. According to the report, the delay in the right diagnosis is often the result of people being misdiagnosed at first. In half of the cases that the Autism Diagnostic examined, the person involved also had another mental disorder that is more visible. This report will be handed to State Secretary Martin van Rijn of Public Health on Friday.
