Maastricht Univ. stops experimenting on dogs

The Maastricht University has decided to completely stop using dogs as test animals, the University announced in a press release on Thursday. This follows uproar caused by an experiment in which the University used Labradors to test the effectiveness of pacemakers. According to the University, the protests against the experiment are so fierce that they fear for the safety of the animals and their carers. "The dogs and their caregivers run unacceptable risks during the daily transport to the playground", the university writes on its website. The experiment was suspended in September after activists made threats against the university and its employees. More than 127 thousand people signed a petition against these tests. The university will continue experiments with other animals.
