Labour: Increase traffic fines against scofflaws

The PvdA thinks that traffic fines should be higher for each repeated offense. According to the party, this would force offenders to learn from their mistakes and adjust their behavior more quickly. PvdA Parliamentarian Duco Hoogland believes that this measure would improve the effect of traffic fines, RTL Nieuws reports. He also believes that this system is fairer than the existing system because fist time offenders' fines will be lower. Hoogland pointed out that the Court of Audit previously came to the conclusion that higher fines have little effect on road safety. "Someone being fined hundreds of euros for committing a minor traffic violation one time does not improve road safety." Hoogland said. "Fines should be there to punish dangerous behavior, not to fill the state treasury." Hoogland did not explain exactly how much lower a fine for a first time offender would be. But he did say for a minor first offense, such as driving 3 kilometers above the speed limit, a warning would be in order. If you do it again, you would get a fine, which will increase significantly for each following offense.
