Community police officer beaten with hammer

A 16 year old Amsterdam resident attacked a community police officer with a hammer on Monday morning. The officer received several blows to the head. The incident happened around 11:40 a.m. on Jan Blankenstraat, where the officer was performing an inspection. Without cause the suspect grabbed a hammer and attacked the officer. Despite the blow to the head the officer managed to arrest the suspect and call for backup. Colleagues called for an ambulance to help the officer. He suffered a serious head injury and has been admitted to the hospital for treatment. The suspect was arrested and is in custody for further investigation.
