Driver in fatal accident returns home

The twenty-year-old who struck a group of pedestrians with a car on Wednesday in Hoornsterzwaag, has now returned home, according to Leeuwarder Courant. The driver was interrogated the whole of Thursday by the police but was released in the evening after consulting with the Public Prosecutor. A 49-year old man from Winsum lost his life in the accident and his 44-year old wife was seriously injured. Three other people in the group were injured as well. They were visiting a classic car show, and were struck by the auto when walking in the dark on the side of the road near their campsite. There were no sidewalks or bike paths on the road they walked. The driver still remains as a suspect in the case and is accused of reckless driving. The man did not appear to be drunk, thus police saw no reason to conduct a blood test. Deputy Mayor Harmannus Blok said that the municipality symphatizes with the family. "This is a huge blow to the family and to all who are close to them. But also for the community," he told to RTV Noord. A minute of silence was held on Thursday evening in Hoornsterzwaag
