Widows in Enschede fireworks disaster suing the Netherlands
The widows of the firemen who died in the Enschede fireworks disaster in May 2000, are suing the Dutch State. According to the Telegraaf, these widows want access to a secret police report on the investigation into the cause of the tragedy.
Despite numerous police investigations, the cause of the disaster has never been conclusively determined. The firefighter widows have hired a lawyer to help them get clarification on the matter.
The lawyer, Martin de Witte, has started legal proceedings in which he wants to force the State to release information based on the Open Government Act. He has also started a separate witness questioning, in which the key role players will be questioned under oath.
Next week marks the 15th anniversary of the devastating explosions at fireworks storage facility SE Fireworks in Enschede. 23 people were killed, almost a thousand people were wounded and an entire neighborhood was wiped off the map.
