Festival crane collapse kills one, injures up to 10
At least one adult is dead and 10 others are injured following the collapse of a cherry picker crane during a festival in Oosterwolde, Gelderland. At least five of those injured are children, local police said on Saturday, and three of the injuries are serious according to the mayor there.
Those injured were both on the ground and in the crane’s platform, police added. Trauma helicopters were dispatched to the scene within minutes of the 2:30 p.m. accident.
"Now the [crane's] basket did not fall down, but the entire cherry picker fell over onto a man," killing him, Oosterwolde Mayor Adriaan Hoogendoorn said from the scene in an interview. Ten injuries were immediately confirmed, of which at least three are serious, Hoogendoorn said.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The owner of the crane was next to the toppled cherry picker, but was too upset to comment on it, the broadcaster said.
The children hurt in the incident were participating with Stichting Wens Ambulance, or Wish Ambulance, police said. They were marching alongside an ambulance in a promotion for the foundation, which grants wishes to terminally ill patients.
The incident happened at the 14th Oldtimershow, a festival of classic tractors and cars, with engines, motorcycles and scooters on display, the event’s website says.
