Police to re-start Highway Patrol
The police have decided to reinstate the Highway Patrol, to crack down on traffic violators like speeders, drunk drivers and tailgaters.
The Highway Patrol will initially consist of 50 traffic cops. A spokesperson told RTL that they have already started working. "The team must ensure that unteachable traffic vandals that continually cause trouble can be caught", spokesman Remco Gerretsen told the Telegraaf. "Speeders, callers behind the wheel, drivers who ignore red crosses.. There is a whole range of offenses we pay special attention to. It must simply become safer on the highways."
The new team will patrol the highways in inconspicuous vehicles that are equipped with technical gadgets that, for example, can check for unpaid fines and whether the vehicle is insured.
When the National Police was formed in 2013, it was decided to eliminate the traffic police. The work was handed over to the regions and officers patrolling the highways were supposed to also do traffic control. But traffic control fell by the wayside during, for example, traces on human traffickers or drug dealers.
