Record number of passengers visit Dutch airports
A record number of more than 60 million passengers caught a flight at a Dutch airport last year, an increase of almost 5 percent compared to 2013. Most of these passengers traveled through Schiphol. This is according to figures released by Statistics Netherlands today.
With 90 percent of all transported passengers, Schiphol remains the most important airport in the Netherlands. Over the past five years the number of passengers carried at this airport increased by 26 percent to 55 million passengers in 2014. Schiphol also showed the strongest growth in passenger numbers of the largest airports in Western Europe over the past 5 years. Frankfurt showed an increase of 16 percent and London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gualle passengers increased by 11 percent.
Of the national airports, Eindhoven Airport showed the highest increase in number of passengers carried over the past five years. Last year Eindhoven carried 6.5 percent (4 million) of the passengers in the Netherlands compared to 3.7 percent (1.7 million) in 2009. The increase in passengers is partly due to the destinations from this airport doubling.
