Many Labour voters want new leadership
44 percent of people who voted for the PvdA in the 2012 parliamentary elections, think that party leader Diederik Samsom should step down. Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb and Deputy Prime Minister Lodewijk Asscher are the two most popular candidates for his successor.
This is according to a study done by Peil.nl and Maurice de Hond, RTL reports. De Hond interviewed more than 600 people who voted for the PvdA in 2012. 75 percent of them did not vote for the Labour Party in Wednesday's provincial elections. More than half of the participants indicated that they would consider voting for the PvdA in the parliamentary elections, 40 percent said that they would not.
In the provincial elections on Wednesday, the PvdA lost support in all municipalities and provinces compared to the previous provincial elections. The party now only has 8 seats left in the Eerste Kamer (Senate) compared to the 14 that the PvdA previously held. This is the least number of seats that the PvdA's had since the party was formed in 1946.
