Grenade and gun shuts Rijswijk neighborhood

Police cleared an entire neighborhood in Rijswijk today following the arrest of a man who not only had a gun and hand grenade in his possession, but also said that he had a stash of dangerous chemicals at his house.

The 52-year-old man who is reportedly “confused” surrendered to a police station in Rijswijk this morning. He handed officers a gun and a grenade; police officers and fire fighters rushed to his house when he told them about the chemicals at his house. In total they evacuated 16 houses in the direct vicinity, while they started X-raying the residence. The residents were taken to a nearby school building; the street was blocked off.

Officers also went to an address at Ridderkerk, where the man said he also lived sometimes. At this address they found marijuana plants, fireworks and a gun bullet. Another 52-year-old man the officers encountered at the house was arrested.
