Univ. Amsterdam protestors call nat'l protest day
The students currently occupying the University of Amsterdam's Maagdenhuis, have called for a national protest day on Wednesday, NRC reports.
This announcement was made following a meeting with student unions from other cities yesterday. About 200 students from Nijmegen, Groningen, Rotterdam, Wageningen and Utrecht attended the meeting.
The intention is that there will be demonstrations across the country on Wednesday protesting for more democracy and participation in universities. According to the students, money is too often the main factor when decisions are made by the university authorities.
Two weeks ago students decided to occupy the UvA's Bungehuis. In addition to more democracy and participation, the students also wanted the university to keep the Bungehuis, which was sold to Aedes Real Estate early this year. The building was evacuated by the police after 11 days of occupation. 46 people were arrested. Students occupied the Maagdenhuis after a march the day after the Bungehuis was cleared out.
