Big Brother Award shortlist incl. Justice Minister, Deputy PM

Deputy Prime Minister Lodewijk Asscher, Minister Ivo Opstelten of Security and Justice and the Tax Service are the three finalists for this year's Big Brother Awards. The Big Brother Awards are presented annually to the largest privacy violators of the last year.

Here follows the reasons for the top three candidates' nominations, according to the Big Brother Award website. The Tax Service was nominated for its "seemingly unlimited appetite for information about Dutch citizens".

Minister Asscher was nominated for the introduction of SyRi - "a system that ties together vast amounts of data to screen citizens".

Minister Optselten was nominated for "the preservation of data retention, the continuation of his hack plans, wanting to massively store license plate and location data, structurally ignoring privacy concerns and suspicion of all Dutch". You can vote for your favorite candidate on the Big Brother Awards' website.
