Dutch, Danes partner to share wind energy

Dutch electricity transmission system operator TenneT has announced today that it will be laying a 300-kilometer subsea cable to share electricity between Denmark and the Netherlands. TenneT has partnered with Danish counterpart Energinet.dk to allow the two countries to share their renewable energy resources.

The cable will have a capacity of 700 megawatts, and will run from Eemshaven, Groningen to Endrup, Jutland.

“An important purpose of the COBRAcable is to allow for the integration of more renewable wind energy into the Dutch electricity system,” said TenneT CEO Mel Kroon. “The cable will make a significant contribution to the realization of a sustainable international energy landscape. An important goal of the European Union and TenneT.”

Construction is expected to start in early 2016 and be completed by early 2019. TenneT and Energinet.dk will each take 50 percent ownership in the project.
