Maastricht Univ buckles; dogs up for adoption

The eight Labradors that Maastricht University was planning to use for animal testing have been moved to an organization that is looking for adoptive families for them. These Labradors, along with 31 others, would have been used in a research study into improving pacemakers. This caused so much turmoil that the university decided to temporarily suspend the study. The university has now come to the conclusion that the Labradors already in the Central Animal Testing Facility of the university can't be kept there until they decide whether or not to start the study up again. A spokesperson said that the facility is not an environment where you would normally keep animals, it is an environment which is aimed to perform experiments with animals. Therefore they will relocate these dogs to new homes. The spokesperson went on to say that the decision to relocate the dogs does not mean that the University will stop using dogs in animal testing. They will determine how to proceed. The unrest over this research study was caused by a petition done by the Anti Animal Testing Coalition (ADC). The petition called for a halt to the researched study and collected 80 thousand signatures. The ADC is protesting at Maastricht University this afternoon, demanding a complete cessation of animal testing and the release of all animals.
